What is the Driver's License Exchange?
The exchange of the permit consists of the homologation of the driving license that you have, exchanging it for the equivalent Spanish permit, being a much easier procedure to carry out than obtaining a new permit.
In addition to the permits issued by the DGT itself, there are other permits with which you can drive in our country. These permits allow you to circulate under a series of conditions and a certain time. Therefore, if you are a resident in Spain, we advise you to exchange, or change, your permit for a Spanish permit and drive with total freedom.
The following types of permits can be exchanged:
Exchange of permits and authorizations issued by Spanish security forces.
Exchange of permits for accredited diplomats in Spain.
Foreign Permits: Check the country of origin of your permit to see how you can process the exchange.
IMPORTANT
The first thing you should know is that the driving license is not exchangeable if you have obtained it in your country of origin while you are already a legal resident in Spain. With the exception of the Republic of Korea, in which case the date of obtaining the permit may be later than the date of legal residence.
What foreign citizens can exchange the Driver's License?
In addition to the countries of the European Union, the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) there is an agreement to exchange driving licenses for residents of Spain that have been issued by the countries listed below.
